Engineered Stone Ban: What Homeowners Need to Know
Engineered stone benchtops have long been a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms for South Australian homeowners. Aesthetically appealing, sleek, but with a dark side. A growing concern over the serious health risks associated with these materials has led to a recent ban in Australia. A safe home is a good home. As a South Australian Home Builder, Lofty is obliged to keeping you informed, and ensuring your home is safe. This is what you need to know.
Why Engineered Stone is Banned
Engineered stone contains high levels of crystalline silica, a natural mineral that when inhaled, can cause silicosis – a debilitating and often fatal lung disease. The dangers of silica exposure became increasingly clear as the number of silicosis cases in workers fabricating and installing engineered stone skyrocketed.
To protect the health of both workers and homeowners, Australia implemented a nationwide ban on engineered stone effective 1st July 2024. South Australia has specific transitional arrangements in place, allowing projects contracted before 31st December 2023, to proceed with engineered stone until 31st December 2024. For more information on the specific regulations in your area, please refer to the SafeWork SA guidelines.
