Important Steps Leading Up to Moving Into a New Home

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting periods in anyone’s life is moving into a new home. There is a long list of tasks to complete before you can feel fully at home, so don’t get too distracted by thoughts about the date of your housewarming party, what you’ll grow in your veggie patch, or the kind of houseplants you want. Before you even begin moving, you should be asking yourself “what necessities do I need for a new home” and what jobs need to be taken care of?
To make things simpler, the team at Lofty Building Group have provided you with the complete calendar of tasks that must be completed prior to your move into the new home!

 4 Weeks before the move

Organise your moving day transport!- If you’re using professional movers to assist you, make sure you reserve your moving day far in advance because they frequently have hectic schedules. Even if you’re doing all of the moving yourself, you still need to reserve your rental van or truck in advance to be sure you can use it on the day you need it.

Update your address!- It can feel overwhelming and draining to keep a mental list of everyone, groups, and companies you need to inform while changing addresses. However, notifying your electricity company, the electoral office, or your insurance providers about your change in circumstances in advance can take a weight off your shoulders and give you more time to focus on bigger tasks leading up to the move!

2 Weeks before the move

Set up utilities!- Setting up new services, like switching phone or internet providers, can take weeks because technicians aren’t always accessible at short notice. Give yourself enough time so that you can enter a house with hot water and Wi-Fi already in place.

Pack all non-essentials!- Pack any unused items from your wardrobes, garage, cupboards and storage spaces, etc. first. Usually, the kitchen gets packed last. Keep boxes that have been packed in each room as you pack each one. This will make it simpler to identify the boxes and keep you organised. On the side of each box, write the contents’ names and the room to which they belong. With this tactic, when the boxes arrive at your new house, you can arrange them in the appropriate rooms. Start to slowly pack the kitchen in the week before moving, and make sure to do so in an organised and careful manner to ensure all kitchenware is kept safe throughout the move.

1 Day before the move

Keep all your necessities together!- It always takes a little bit of digging among boxes on the first night in a new home, to try to find your toothbrush, pillows or phone chargers! Keep these all together in a box labelled as ‘first night essentials,’ to help make that first day easier.

Unplug all electronics!- Make sure that you disconnect and unplug all appliances and move them away from the walls to help with the removal the next day. This includes getting rid of any/all food in your fridge and defrosting it overnight and moving laundry appliances as well.

Get a good night’s rest!- Finally, make sure you’re able to relax and get the right amount of sleep the night before, you’ll be up doing physical work all day so you need as much rest as possible!

So there you have it…what an exciting journey you have ahead of you. Even while it won’t ever be completely stress-free, a little bit of preparation will make it a lot easier to handle. Contact the team at Lofty Building Group today to get your dream home started.
